World Blood Donor Day

June 14 around the world usually celebrates World Blood Donor Day. It is important to note that this event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and products, and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. In fact, transfusion of blood and blood products, as crucial as they are, helps save millions of lives each year. Patients suffering from life-threatening conditions can be helped through blood transfusions, as this can grant them to live longer and with higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

We at NMPC regard this compassionate humane act of donating blood to patients in need as an act of heroism, as there isn’t an adequate supply of safe blood, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. Let us consider blood donation as a gift that saves lives. We are thankful for all the blood donors for giving their life-saving donations, and for the ministries of health in achieving self-sufficiency in safe blood and blood products based on voluntary blood donation. Together, let’s consider the extraordinary act of saving lives through donating our blood that quite literally costs a life.
