Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the world for both men and women. More men die of lung cancer than the next two most deadly types of cancer for men (prostate and colorectal) combined.More women die of lung cancer than breast cancer. Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer. Cigarette smoking causes 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths, according to experts. Other risk factors for lung cancer include being treated with radiation therapy to the breast or chest; exposure to asbestos, chromium, nickel, arsenic, soot, or tar in the workplace; and exposure to radon. When smoking is combined with other risk factors, the risk of lung cancer increases.

Furthermore, lung cancer is treated in several ways, depending on the type of lung cancer and how far it has spread. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these treatments. People with small cell lung cancer are usually treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The treatment is delivered safely, does not involve surgery or require hospitalization, and only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Side effects are minimal, and are usually mild and manageable.

To further be informed about the possibility of lung cancer, it is important that we are aware of the signs and symptoms of this deadly disease, and these include:

  • A cough for 3 weeks or more
  • A change in a cough you have had for a long time
  • A chest infection that does not get better, or repeated chest infections
  • Feeling breathless and wheezy for no reason
  • Coughing up blood
  • Losing weight for no obvious reason
  • feeling tired
  • Chest or shoulder pain that does not get better
  • A hoarse voice for 3 weeks or more

We at New Marketlink Pharmaceutical Corporation encourage each and everyone to visit their doctor when these signs persist. We uphold this duty to inform everyone of the risks of lung cancer as a way to fight against the threat of lung cancer in Filipinos.
