June 12 is commemorated as the day The Philippines declared independence from its colonizers, mainly from Spain and The United States of America. It was a day of liberation and freedom after centuries of occupation and oppression, mainly to erase our native identity. As heavily colonized as we were in the past, we have continued to nurture our roots and recognize our heritage as our own and of historical value. This remains true with the fact that after gaining independence, the Philippine government made sure to steadily distance the Philippines from its latter colonizer, The United States, after rounds of its government denied and refused to pass a war damages compensation bill that would have provided millions of dollars to the Philippines. This compensation would have been benefits for Filipino veterans who had fought alongside the United States in World War II.
As the country erupts in a vibrant display of patriotism and pride, we at NMPC encourage each and every Filipino to celebrate and recognize Independence Day as a day of freedom, and a day to honor the Philippines for gaining back its place on the map, this time on its own as a fortified nation. Beyond the parades, festivities, and fireworks, June 12 holds historical and cultural significance. It is a reflection of the enduring spirit of resilience and freedom of the Filipino people. Join us to celebrate Philippine Independence Day, along with a massive number of Filipino communities around the world as we showcase Filipino culture, cuisine, and traditions, beaming with pride to acknowledge this event as truly and proudly Filipino.
